Become a Referee

THANK YOU for your interest in becoming a U.S. Soccer Referee!

The process to become a U.S. Soccer Referee in West Virginia consists of the following steps, each of which is explained, below, in greater detail:

  1. Create a free profile at the U.S. Soccer Learning Center.

  2. Complete the free, online New U.S. Soccer Grassroots Referee Course.

  3. Find, register for and attend an available in-person, field training session on a date and at a location in West Virginia that fits your schedule.

STEP 1: Create a Referee Profile in the U.S. Soccer Learning Center at https://learning.ussoccer.com/referee

  1. Select "Sign Up" in the upper right corner of the screen.

  2. You must be at least 13 years old.

  3. All Learning Center profiles will require a unique primary email address. A secondary email address, such as that of a parent, may be provided to be copied on communications from U.S. Soccer.

STEP 2: Complete the free, online New Grassroots Referee Course

  1. Complete the New Grassroots Referee Online Course >>. See the video: How to Navigate the Course Classroom >> (5:23).

  2. Duration: the online course will take you approximately 5 total hours, which can be completed over multiple sessions. Your progress will be saved as you take the course (be sure to click "Save Progress" after viewing each video), and you can leave and return to this online course at any time.

STEP 3: Find, register for and attend an in-person field training session

  1. Login to your profile in the U.S. Soccer Learning Center and select Courses -> Available Courses -> Grassroots First Time Referees and then click on the red [Go to Course List] button.

  2. Find and register for an in-person field training session on a date and at a location in West Virginia that you can attend.

  3. Cost: $40 (for 2022). If you are 18+ years old, you will also need to complete the NCSI Background Screening ($30).

  4. Complete ALL additional online assignments in the course, such as "Intro to Safe & Healthy Playing Environments." See the video: How to Navigate the Course Classroom >> (5:23)

  5. Attend the in-person field training session you've registered for to complete your U.S Soccer Grassroots Referee License.

Upon successful completion of Steps 1 - 3, above, you will be a licensed U.S. Soccer Grassroots Referee and certified to officiate USSF-affiliated, grassroots games (youth and adult competitions) in small-sided 7 v 7, 9 v 9 and/or 11 v 11 venues.
