FUTURO 2013 - Learning Modules - Severity of Fouls

When assessing the severity of fouls, the Laws of the Game offer four definitions:

  1. No Foul
    • Fair Challenge
  2. Careless
    • Lack of attention, consideration or precaution when making a challenge
    • No further disciplinary sanction {beyond the awarding of a free kick or penalty kick} is needed if a foul is judged to be careless
  3. Reckless
    • A challenge with complete disregard of the danger to or consequences for the opponent
    • A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned (yellow card)
  4. Excessive Force
    • A challenge that has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring the opponent
    • A player who uses excessive force must be sent off (red card)
